Rig Bits and Pieces  E-mail
The site wouldn’t be complete without a chance to look at rig components in detail and more importantly, those that you can create yourself from readily available tackle items or by modifying them to suit your personal needs.

Confidence in pike fishing comes from knowing you are on a water that has pike of the calibre (or bigger) that you are seeking, that you have the right bait,  and you have the right tackle to put the fish of your dreams on the bank. The first two are always a little unknown, but terminal tackle is something that is totally in your control, for the most part anyway! If you are happy to buy all your tackle ready to go, or you are someone with no natural skills when it comes to making or modifying anything, then there is nothing wrong with solely using the top branded pike tackle available in the UK today.  Drennan, Fox, Prowla, and the like all produce quality tackle that is capable of catching any of the pike that swim in the lakes rivers and waters of the UK.

However, I don't know any serious pike angler who doesn't make or modify tackle to suit his needs as they cannot ‘buy’ exactly what they want, or have an aversion to ‘ready made’ tackle. Those needs are often born out of experience and the confidence that having exactly the 'bit' you need to do the job you want, makes you fish that little bit better, letting the angler focus on where those pike are likely to be, knowing you are presenting the best bait in the best possible way!

Sometimes that is just not available in a packet from the tackle manufacturers, perhaps they make the bit you need, but its not exactly what you are happy with, and a little bit of doubt exists about how well you are fishing! So we have to make some of the specialist bits ourselves to get exactly what we want. The bits and pieces shown below are a mix of bits and pieces that are 'personal', developed for a purpose from items of tackle readily available in tackle shops, replacing some of the commercially available components that you could buy ready made from one or more of the tackle manufacturers.

Traces are one of the most obvious items that are custom made many pike anglers, but there are many other bits that we can make ourselves, and catching pike on one or all of them can be very satisfying. What follows will hopefully help those who wish to build the rigs themselves and get that feeling too.
